How to find yourself.

There are always points in life — specifically periods of significant change — when you must go back to the drawing board to figure out who you are and what you stand for.

At the age of 24, I had a spiritual awakening. I was in a deep depression and started wrestling with many of life’s big questions. I’ve suffered anxiety due to being dyslexic, but I never let it stopped me! I was diagnosed with severe anxiety at the age of 22. This was just before I started university. Reflecting back in the two years I studied fashion I was going through a mental breakdown. It wasn’t until I came home and was hospitalised for the fourth time that my spiritual awakening began.

Self-discovery should be an essential goal for everyone. Some people go through life, playing a role to mask who they really are. Others become what others want them to be. “Know thyself” is a classic platitude that continues to offer a valuable reminder today. It is only through the discovery of self that we can identify our purpose and actualize our potential. On the other hand, failure to embark on a pilgrimage of self-discovery will cheat us of the opportunity to understand who we are and what we want out of life, as well as how we can help others during our time on this earth.

If you’re not sure how to set about probing your psyche and emotional depths, the following tips can help you embark on your journey of self-discovery.

Read self discovery books.

Start by getting acquainted with the notion of self-discovery. Learn the meaning of a personal inventory and how to handle what you find. Reading books about the discovery of self will open new doorways of perception and understanding. Some can be studied as an idea or text, while others are designed as workbooks so that you can research a section and then write your thoughts. One instance is Roberta Allen’s The Playful Way to Knowing Yourself: A Creative Workbook to Inspire Self Discovery (2003). Her e-book takes a lighthearted strategy for exploring your internal self. Another is The Journey Called You: The Roadmap to Self Discovery and Acceptance with the aid of Julie Fuimano (2005). Browse your favourite bookstall or library for more titles that will introduce you to strategies of self-discovery.

Take inventory.

Buy a journal or notebook and set aside some time to reflect on your life so far. What have you accomplished? What are your pet peeves? Do you have any major fears? Are you struggling against certain obstacles? Have you set realistic goals? Do you enjoy occasional daydreams or fantasies? List these in categories and see which area has more. That might be the category to focus on first. Or if you feel strong emotions about one of the areas, start with that one.

Embrace discovery of the self.

In assessing your private inventory, you may sense anxious, nervous, or even a little afraid of what you should find deep within. Don’t worry. Whatever lies hidden in your soul will advantage from the mild of discovery. If you notice poor things, like fears, doubts, or terrible traits, exposure will assist you in dealing with them as soon as and for all. But if you locate beautiful things, like strength, skill, or daring, don’t be afraid to use them to attain your best goals. Take delivery of something you find and continue to go forward in your quest for self-discovery.

You can develop even more advantageous utilizing sincerely dealing with the characteristics published by using your private inventory. Don’t be afraid to admit who you are and receive your limitations. Only then can you start working on the weaknesses to become a better individual and revel in your strengths to get pleasure from every day.
